Living an hour away from “civilization” (meaning the nearest city), grocery shopping and running errands get wrapped into a weekly day trip to the Shenandoah Valley. When I return home at the end of the day, I am always hoping that I can make it to the top of this mountain by sunset. This time, I was rewarded with a gorgeous golden sunset from the Shenandoah Mountain overlook:

Hi Annette, I live just a couple or three hours down the road from you In abingdon, Virginia. Don’t we have the most lovely sunrises and sunsets. I loved yours.

Hi Joe – I know Abingdon, another beautiful place! Good morning to you….

Joe, I think it’s actually a 5 hr drive -went down there for a conference last fall and it was a LONG drive – doesn’t appear like it on the map, though….

That’s a stunning golden photo….I love your landscape, and the way you capture it’s fleeting beauty 🙂

Seonaid – I just found this comment in the SPAM folder – what’s wrong with that?! And to think that I just deleted a full spam folder a few days ago – who knows what else was in there?
Thanks for your comment – “fleeting beauty” is so apt, because a minute or two later, the show was over….

It’s funny because a few of my readers had said that my comments had gone into spam, and they wondered if their comments to me had gone the same way….I checked, and they had. 22 great genuine comments stuck into spam over just 3 days 🙂 No idea what’s going on with wordpress? So glad you found my comment 🙂

The light on those foreground trees, and the layers of the mountains in the background, along with the sun peeking in from the left, perfect!

Thanks, Jeff. You’d think that this was a fall picture, but it was taken in the spring. The sunset turned the leaves into gold!

That was in fact my first impression, but as I looked a little deeper I did notice there was none of that glorious autumn color on the mountains in the distance. So amazing what the right light can do to a landscape.

Here I am! I told you I’d drop by … and I was greeted with this beautiful image. I have never been in Virginia though, from your photo, it would seem to represent the overlap of three states with which I am familiar, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. I relate to living far from civilization. Joanna and I once determined that we live four hours from everywhere! That’s not to say that groceries and the feed store aren’t closer, but all the big cities are half-a-day’s drive from us. Very much the double-edged sword. Anyway … thanks for the Pairodox visit. I’ll be back. D PS: I’d be interested to know how you happened upon Pairodox Farm?

It is, although we haven’t gone out there as much as we’d like. If it ever stops raining, we should try to get some summer shots!

Yes, the constant rain keeps messing up my plans, too. But I started to go out regardless of the weather. I took some houseguests on a scenic railroad ride (do you know Cass, WV?) and it rained really hard as the train was chugging up the mountain. when we got to the top, the clouds lifted for 5 minutes for a glorious view before everything got fogged in again….

Breathtaking, I remember a song from many years ago, but never knew what Shenandoah was.

Shenandoah is the name of a river, a very big valley, and this mountain – and the song, of course 🙂
