The Blue Mob

The first scout showed up in the morning. I had not seen them at the bird feeder until now but often heard their distinctive screeching calls in the woods.

Suddenly, the pergola was a blur of blues, maybe 15 birds altogether. The entire tribe had descended.

They never sat still for long and were quite skittish about being photographed. Since I didn’t dare change my lens to take in the whole clan, I focused more on individuals, their poses and feather patterns. I enjoy their bright blue feathers, reminiscent of summer skies and white clouds.

In honor of their visit, I’ve distilled blue jay essence in this image:

I love Blue Jays! When I start to miss them though I look up and see our Flycatchers that are quite similar in size. They are just as chatty but not as screechy sounding. Great captures once again!

    • Your flycatchers must be different from the ones here. Our flycatchers are grey/black/whitish and the size of sparrows. Blue Jays are big birds and they can be raucous, but I still enjoy them.

We have a variety anywhere from about six inches to almost nine inches, most of them are brownish/grayish on the back and have yellow tummies. They definitely aren’t as bold as the Blue Jays used to sit in our pine trees in Canada. πŸ™‚

They are so pretty! And you did a great job of capturing them with your camera too.
