Doing Time
Skeleton trees
Slide their pale shadows
Across shimmering water,
Memory dimming of
Swaying grasses underfoot
And rustling leaves overhead.
Skeleton trees â
Puzzled remnants
Of a valley flooded,
Stubborn obstacles to boats
Bleached trunks remain:
Rest stops for dragonflies.
White shadows
fade away quietly –
tree spirits seeking
swelling seeds
to raise into
treehood again.
touching words, I see those spirits drifting, seeking their own …

By the way, I’m going to be in VA with my kids the second week of April. Is spring getting there yet? Any green on the ground and in the trees?

Where in Virginia will you be? The Shenandoah Valley and East Coast are always warmer and move into spring a month before the mountainous areas…

We’re staying in Montpellier, by Richmond, but we’ll be driving all over the place.

Ah, that should be a fairly warm area with lots of spring flowers and spring green by then! If you are planning a trip into the mountains (3 hrs west of Richmond), let me know, maybe I can give you some ideas for can’t-miss places…

I think the farthest we’re going to go West is Luray to see the caverns. Are there any areas of the valley closer to Richmond we should visit? I can’t drive more than a couple of hours with the kids in the car (1 hour would be nice), so I’d love to hear when we can go to enjoy nature. So far, everybody has been giving me towns and cities to visit, but nothing nature related, so I hope you can help. đ

Nelson County West and South of Charlottesville is really beautiful. From Afton Mountain you can access the Blue Ridge parkway with lots of places to stop and hike.
On the way to Luray caverns you can also stop by the Shenandoah river and go for a canoe or kayak ride.

I love the simplicity of this shot – but wonder about the green water? Lovely words too…

green water reflects back the surrounding green trees from the hillside near where these tree trunks were…
