Imagine living in a time before electricity, airplanes, and fast intercontinental travel. Imagine, in those ancient times, looking up into the sky wondering what there was beyond the clouds, way, way up there.
I still remember Reinhard Mey’s classic song Über den Wolken
(YouTube link)
Alle Ängste, alle Sorgen, sagt man,
Blieben darunter verborgen und dann
Würde, was uns groß und wichtig erscheint,
Plötzlich nichtig und klein.
High above the clouds, freedom must be limitless.
All your fears and all your worries, they say,
Remain hidden underneath and then
Whatever seems big and important,
Becomes insignificant and small.
Your eyes follow a bird that spirals higher and higher,
carried effortlessly by its wings and the winds, until it seems to transcend the sun.
Maybe you envy this bird for what you don’t have – freedom from place, freedom from gravity, the ability to go anywhere it pleases. It serves no master.
Maybe you were told that birds were the messengers of the gods and that your soul leaves your body as a bird when you die. Your healers and kings decorated themselves with the feathers of birds; it gave them special powers, wisdom, and the highest status among ordinary men and women. In any case, birds were majestic and mystical and awe-inspiring.
You send your dreams and wishes with them and return to your worldly tasks – inspired.

Beautiful photos, Annette. Yes, I often envy the birds, especially when I’m off to the airport to catch a plane. 🙂

That song by Reinhard Mey usually pops in my mind when I’m in an airplane (but never at any other time). And birds…I could (and have) watch(ed) them for hours…Thanks for your comment, Sylvia.

The photo of the bird and the moon is simply splendid. Recently, I was treated to the sight of a flock of sandhill cranes rising up in flight. There is something heart-stirring about it.

I, too, love to watch the larger birds (like herons) take off, in slow motion at first, until they reach more height and speed. It is fascinating…
