I am celebrating the last day of February with a little fairytale illustrated with ice photos captured this morning.
As winter dragged on and people and animals had little food left, one brave woman decided to trek to the ice dragon’s cave. Perhaps he’d be willing to make a deal and release winter, slowly.
She set out at sunrise, on her ice-covered planet:
Traversed beautiful, but icy-cold landscapes:
Said “hello” and rested a while under her favorite frozen tree who encouraged her to find the Ice Dragon. “But be careful, Ice Dragon doesn’t like humans.”
When she came to this waterfall, she suddenly wondered whether this was a good idea. Her heart was beating fast:
She walked through the frozen falls and found the entrance to the dragon’s winter palace:
Once inside, she saw where the dragon guarded the planet’s warmth:
And then he walked towards her, the Ice Dragon. He did not look happy to be disturbed:
“Mr. Dragon, sorry to disturb you in your winter abode. But I’ve walked a long, long way to….”
“What do you want?” The dragon growled impatiently.
“I was just wondering, all that fire you keep in here….”
“I don’t have all day, what do you want?”
“Well, it’s been an awfully long winter and my people and the animals are really suffering. Would you consider sharing some of your fire with us? We’d really appreciate it.”
“Well, I don’t care that much about your kind. But if you say that the animals are suffering…..well, I’ll see what I can do.” And with that, the Ice Dragon retreated deep into the warm recesses of his cave.
She slowly wandered away from the dragon’s cave and began her long trek home. Her heart was beginning to hope that the Ice Dragon would breathe a bit of fire. Then, spring could begin.

Yes, Charlie…and giving ourselves permission to be playful (and silly). It helped that I finished gathering up all our tax stuff last night resulting in a sense of relief and play all day long.

We’d love to get a lingering visit from the winter/snow dragon, but still waiting. Had a hailstorm this morning that left the ground covered in white, as though a snowstorm had passed through. alas, it is already gone.
Great story, and great photos, as always. You continue to surprise and delight me.

With a little incentive, I might convince the Ice Dragon to blow cold breath your way….:-)
Thanks for the lovely compliments, Larry.

Ha! I wish it WAS that easy. On the other hand, I’ve seen robins shivering in snow here in Richmond. That usually means winter is nearly over. The robins come back, it snows once more, and spring comes. And that’s been true everywhere I’ve lived around the country.

I’ve seen robins in Staunton as well. Unfortunately, we are about a month behind the Valley in our growing season and that also includes later arrivals of birds in the spring. But I noticed that it wasn’t fully dark yet at 6:40 tonight. That’s quite a treat…

We had the same thing when we lived near Lake Michigan. The springs were later and cooler, but falls were also longer and warmer than my mother who lived about 40 miles inland.
I agree – days are noticeably longer now, which is so nice.

So much wonderful texture flowing with your words, puts me in kind of meditation. Though I can’t relate to the name of Ice Dragon, it’s beyond names, but what ever has it’s own imagination that works.

The Ice Dragon is my metaphor for “Winter,” if that helps? 🙂
