We all know intuitively what a shadow is when we see it. I suspect that we often ignore shadows when we look at something, just subtract them from our perception to focus on what’s tangible and “real”. And, yet, without shadows, an image often lacks depth and appears flat.
Sometimes, shadows add a sense of strangeness and exaggeration:
I love the strong shadows in winter, the way the trees throw their abstracted shapes across the snow, their shadows longest during this time of year.
I love the patterns created by shadows, the repetitive geometry of it all.
Not all shadows are dark – when the sun shines into the windows in early morning, shadows against the white wall mirror the colors of the bottles. Here the shadow play is inspired, light-hearted, almost giddy. Clearly, not all shadows are dark and ominous!

Yes, the tree shadows are so well defined on snow, they seem to accentuate the already stark winter landscape with their presence.

Your tree shadows photo is exquisite! It totally captures the shadows’ playful dance upon the snow. The middle tree dances elegantly, while the left-hand-side tree boldly takes it’s space. The right-hand-side tree is gingerly stepping out to play. Thanks for sharing!

It’s a frog mummy…found it totally desiccated like that and loved the eerie shadows it created.

The shadows at this time of the year are so beautiful – I’m glad you captured them so well. The lower sun just makes the lighting even prettier. Ya’ did good (even the frog!).

Hi Nancy – I went down to the mailbox recently and noticed just how long the shadows were and it was noon time! But I am glad we still have sun in winter, unlike places where you hardly see it for weeks or months…

We lived in Rochester, New York for several years. They only have 30 days of sun in a year. We loved living there, but the weather was just miserable.

Seriously – 30 days a year? That’s hard to imagine. Everyone must be suffering from Vit D deficiency then?

Brilliant interpretation of this week’s challenge. I particularly like the glass bottle shots – shadows of colour, very lovely indeed. As Silver mentioned in the comments, that poor frog! Poor thing. I hope he didn’t suffer too much.

This is a great response to the challenge, Annette. What you say about shadows is very true, and yes, we often do just ignore them. I love your images, especially the frog and those grass tufts. 🙂 Well done.
