There are many contrasts and unexpected pairings in this picture:
1. Source of creation: man-made vs. nature-made.
2. Size: small structure next to towering tree
3. Shape: angular, block-shaped barn vs. the vertical trunk and river-delta branchings of the tree
4. Color: dark color of the barn and tree in contrast to the grey/white of the landscape
5. Inside/Outside: the picture was taken from inside a car during a snowstorm. The unexpected white blotches of snow on the windshield add dimensionality.
Experientially, the picture expresses my own ambivalence towards winter: the contrast between the bleakness of harsh weather and the intrigue of finding beauty and interest even in a snowstorm.
The theme for the Weekly Photo Challenge is “Juxtaposition.” Michelle invites us to share images that show βthe act of placing things side by side, especially for the purpose of comparison or contrast.β

Thanks, Mick, usually it takes me longer to respond to the Photo Challenge. Not this time, I’ve got a few more waiting in my draft folder since last night π

I saw a potential one in town with this wi-fi sticker on the window of this office and all you can see in the window are mounds of paper.

Great photo showing juxtaposition of all the elements you describe, Annette, and like you said, a great way to show your ambivalence. π

Thank you, Cathy… I’ve been taking pics almost every single day this month and the scenes always have different moods and elements…something to do when you’ve got cabin fever π

Yes, I know what you mean. It’s a good goal to get out and photograph things every day. I’m focusing on my writing now though and am trying very hard (and often failing) to stay focused. π

I’m trying. This week I got everything done on my list, but am still waiting for Washington Post to send me their submission guidelines. Moving forward though. π

I have a story idea I want to pitch to them, but just waiting for the guidelines, which I requested yesterday. I’m sure they get thousands of submissions but I think my idea is as good as anything I’ve read there. Not holding my breath!

Thank you, Michael. I am beginning to think about harvesting my winter pics and selecting the ones that might make it to an art show, or into next year’s calendar. This might be one of them….

Thank you, Tish. Much of this winter feels stark to me and, yet, there is beauty in some of it…

I like it because I simply enjoy trees and photographing trees. You’ve captured this one standing tall and strong in the cold. I’ve done one similar before but with a much smaller tree.
