Juxtaposition (I)

Barn and Tree in Snowstorm

Barn and Tree in Snowstorm

There are many contrasts and unexpected pairings in this picture:

1. Source of creation: man-made vs. nature-made.

2. Size: small structure next to towering tree

3. Shape: angular, block-shaped barn vs. the vertical trunk and river-delta branchings of the tree

4. Color: dark color of the barn and tree in contrast to the grey/white of the landscape

5. Inside/Outside: the picture was taken from inside a car during a snowstorm. The unexpected white blotches of snow on the windshield add dimensionality.

Experientially, the picture expresses my own ambivalence towards winter: the contrast between the bleakness of harsh weather and the intrigue of finding beauty and interest even in a snowstorm.

The theme for the Weekly Photo Challenge is “Juxtaposition.” Michelle invites us to share images that show β€œthe act of placing things side by side, especially for the purpose of comparison or contrast.”

I enjoyed the juxtapositions in your photograph, especially bleakness versus beauty.

You really do have great weather for hibernating.

I like it because I simply enjoy trees and photographing trees. You’ve captured this one standing tall and strong in the cold. I’ve done one similar before but with a much smaller tree.
