The outside world was defined by ice this morning. Ice on trees, ice on cars, ice on the driveway, on the deck railing, fences….everywhere.
Ice, icicles, icing…it was quite an ice show. By mid-morning, the dripping icicles sounded like rain. All of a sudden, there was a thunderous rumbling on the roof and a whole mass of ice came sliding down all at once, dropping past the window onto the ground below.
My car looked really cold:
The tractor luckily would not be needed today:
Nor would the clothes line be of any use today:
Some of the patterns were quite intriguing, as on this wire cage:
Everything seemed softer:
And a close-up look of icicles, no matter what strange shape they came in, was quite magical:
My favorite discoveries were these berries in their clear, icy wrapping:
Cathy, at Nomad, Interrupted, also posted pictures of some really beautiful ice-covered plants today.
Another beautiful ice post with a dreamy poem here

Great photos of ice (brrr…). I love the patterns made by the wire cage but the iced red berries are probably my favorite. We only get frost in San Diego and it’s pretty to photograph. Cold enough for me!

That happens to me sometimes, too – the buttons just don’t work (maybe they are all iced up?). It seems like Southern California got pretty cold lately – any good pics from those days? I’m with you – if I could spend the winter in the tropics, I’d gladly leave the ice and snow pics to someone else. But – there is beauty in everything (sigh)….

By the time I’m out in the morning, the frost is gone so no good pics yet, but we still have plenty of cold months ahead of us for that.

Are you close to the mountains? A long weekend there would probably satisfy your cravings….:-)

We’re only 30 minutes away and we can often see the snow on top of the mountain from here (it’s 6500 feet high). I’m already freezing every day as it is, so I’m not sure I could spend a whole weekend in frigid temperatures!

These are amazing pictures, it must have been rather wet and cold, to get such ice. Your clothes line and the wire cage are just amazing. Hope it warms up again!

Thanks, Ute. Today – a totally different scene with several inches of snow!

What beautiful icy shots, it all looks quite surreal…..as though a wave of watery ice was breathed across the land. The icicles dripping from that tractor wheel have such drama to them….and the ice licked rose hips look so pretty.

Oh, I wished I had thought of that line: “ice licked rose hips” – thanks!

It does sound rather delicious….but of course the risk would be a tongue glued by ice to the rose hips 🙂

At least you could break the twig off and come back into the house to let it melt – can’t say that necessarily about a metal pole that your tongue got stuck to 🙂

Yes, magical! All the photos are magical. In my part of the world this is the part of nature we rarely get to see.

Thanks, Robyn. There is a certain magic when ice and snow transform the landscape…enough to get me out in the drizzly cold 🙂

Beautiful photos, Annette! I love the wild rose bushes and the berries. That close up of the icicle is also amazing. The man-made things look so artistic covered in ice: your car, the tractor and the wire cage. All great pictures. And thanks, too, for the mention. What fun the changing weather is! I have missed all this so much over the last couple of years. 🙂 Have a happy snow day today. School is cancelled for me…. Hooray!

Thanks for the feedback. I think we humans have an attraction to altered states…somehow, everything looked so unreal and “artistic” as you said. BTW, I really loved your color-infused ice photos, so jealous….

Most of us don’t take the time to look at icicles. We are just eager to have them melt. These pictures are gorgeous!
I liked to suck on the icicles when young.

Annette, Kudos on capturing beauty in ice and frigid temps. Lovely pictures. The hexagons on the wire cage are so pretty with the ice and so are the berries, just all of them really 🙂

These are really cool pictures. The freezing rain is beautiful but is hard to deal with because of all the damage it leaves behind abd even the sleet is tough. We get freezing rain here all the time.
Be safe!
